Gary Portuesi and Salvatore Rizzo are dynamic figures in the culinary and travel industries, each bringing their unique passions and expertise to the table.
Gary developed a passion for travel at an early age. He and his family visited Italy every year, spending summers in Sicily and exploring the southern regions of the country. This early exposure ignited his curiosity about the authentic aspects of the world, leading him to launch Authentic Sicily in 2002. In 2019, he partnered with Jennifer Schwartz to create Authentic Explorations, focusing on high-end culinary travel programs specific to various regions.
Gary’s commitment to authentic travel has garnered several accolades, including recognition as a Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist and a Travel + Leisure’s A-List member from 2017 to the present. Additionally, he is one of only 21 global Travel Masters acknowledged by the Robb Report. Furthermore, Gary co-owns De Gustibus Cooking School in New York City with his husband, Sal Rizzo, and holds a Level 3 WSET wine expert certification.
Salvatore Rizzo serves as the owner and CEO of De Gustibus Cooking School and is a well-known host and on-camera personality. Since acquiring the school in April 2008, Sal has consistently secured renowned chefs, wine experts, and specialty vendors for engaging culinary experiences. His initiatives include fundraising events, such as a memorable dinner with culinary icons Jean-Georges and Cedric Vongerichten for the Food Dreams Foundation.
Beyond the classroom, Sal is an influential voice in the restaurant industry, participating in national conversations as an authority on food, drink, and New York’s vibrant culinary scene. He has been featured on ABC, Fox News, and Heritage Radio, and serves as a judge for the James Beard Awards. Sal is an active member of the City Harvest Food Council, a culinary council member of the Sylvia Center, and a board member of Spoons Across America, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy eating education among children, teachers, and families.
Together, Gary and Sal merge their expertise, passion for culinary arts, and commitment to authentic experiences, making significant contributions to the worlds of travel and culinary arts.
